The world empires Persia and Greece |
Dan chap 11 |
PERSIA Cyrus 558-530 This prophecy belongs to the year 536/5 B.C., in the time of the government of Cyrus of Persia. Behold, three more kings are going to arise in Persia. So, there will be three more kings in Persia after Cyrus. Kambyses 530-522, Darius I. Hystaspes 522-486, Xerxes (Ahasveros)486-465. Then a fourth will gain far more riches than all of them; Xerxes is the fourth king in Persia including Cyrus. We can say that Persia was at the height of its display of power under his rule. as soon as he becomes strong through his riches, he will arouse the whole empire against the realm of Greece. He also hatched the plan to incorporate the individual Greek states into the Persian empire. He mobilized his entire military forces in order to reach this goal in the famous naval battle of Salamis in 480 B.C., but then he lost this campaign which was decisive for world history. Thus, Greece gradually became the political and cultural center of the eastern Mediterranean region. GREECE Alexander the Great 333-323 And a mighty king will arise, The time between Xerxes I and Alexander the Great is skipped. Here, the conqueror of the Persian empire is introduced. Although the battle at Salamis had been a tremendous triumph for the Greeks, it nevertheless left deep scars upon this people. This was the reason why, about 150 years later, Alexander the Great set out for taking revenge on the Persians. and he will rule with great authority and do as he pleases. But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom will be broken up and parceled out toward the four points of the compass though not to his own descendants, nor according to his authority which he wielded, for his sovereignty will be uprooted and given to others besides them. The golden age of Alexander lasted only a little bit more than 10 years. Around 323 B.C. he succumbed to a malarial fever. Both sons of Alexander were subsequently assassinated. So, Alexander’s generals and their successors divided the huge inheritance after fierce fights among themselves. The Greek Empire was split up into the Diadochi empires: Macedonia, Asia Minor (Pergamum), Egypt, Syria. |

In 320 B.C Ptolemy I takes Phoenicia and Palestine away from his competitor Laomedon. After some further fights Palestine remained in Ptolemaic that is to say in Egyptian hands as from 312 B.C. on and definitely after the battle of Ipsos 301 B.C. It is then governed by Egypt for more than 100 years, until 198 B.C. |

THE FOURTH KING OF THE NORTH Antiochus III the Great 223-187 His sons will mobilize a multitude of great forces; and one of them will overflow and pass through, that he may again wage war up to his very fortress. THE FIFTH KING OF THE SOUTH Ptolemy V Epiphanes 205-182 (5-year-old) Now in those times many will rise up against the KOS; In an alliance with Rome the Egyptians attack the Syrians under Scopas and get Palestine back. 200 cast up a siege ramp and capture a well-fortified city; and the forces of the South will not stand their ground, not even their choicest troops, for there will be no strength to make a stand. But he who comes against him will do as he pleases, and no one will be able to withstand him; of his whole kingdom, bringing with him a proposal of peace which he will put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to ruin it. But she will not take a stand for him |
The KON will again raise a greater multitude than the former, and after an interval of some years he will press on with a great army. Antiochus III conquers in an invasion Cele-Syria. 201 Then the KON will come, Antiochus III defeats the Egyptians under Scopas at the source of the Jordan near Banyas (which later became Cesarea Philippi) Scopas flees to the city of Sidon, is besieged there, and has to surrender. 198. But a commander will put a stop to his scorn against him; moreover, he will repay him for his scorn. Under Acilius Glabrio the Romans defeated the Syrian king at the Thermopylae. 191 In the Roman-Syrian decisive battle at Magnesia on Sipylus/Asia Minor Antiochus III was defeated by the Romans under Lucius Scipio Asiaticus. 190 In the peace of 189 Antiochus is deprived of power to a large extent and has to pay heavy tributes. 189 So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will stumble and fall and be found no more. In order to be able to pay the huge tributes to the Romans, Antiochus III plunders the fortified cities and wealthy temples of his country. He is killed during the pillage of one of these temples in the Elymais (Elam) in the far east of his empire. THE SIXTH KING OF THE NORTH Antiochus IV. Epiphanes 175-164 In his place a despicable person will arise, on whom the honor of kingship has not been conferred, but he will come in a time of tranquility and seize the kingdom by intrigue. Antiochus IV was not destined for being to the throne. After Seleucus IV either his elder son Demetrius or his younger son Antiochus should ascend the throne. 175 Antiochus IV, however, was the brother of Seleucus IV. The overflowing forces will be flooded away before him The first years Antiochus is very successful. 175-171 He dismisses the high priest Onias III. 175 The brother of Onias III, Jason, buys the position of the high priest from Antiochus IV for 540 silver talers. 175 With his Hellenistic-minded party, which had very much influence in Israel, Jason entered into an alliance with Antiochus. However, also Jason is deceived by Antiochus IV. He dismisses Jason, and after Menelaus had murdered Onias III (?), Menelaus becomes high priest. |
and shattered, and also the prince of the covenant After an alliance is made with him he will practice deception, and he will go up and gain power with a small force of people. In a time of tranquility he will enter the richest parts of the realm, and he will accomplish what his fathers never did, nor his ancestors; he will distribute plunder and possessions among them, and he will devise his schemes against strongholds, but only for a time. On his way back home from his first campaign to Egypt Antiochus Epiphanes comes to Jerusalem and captured it without any problems, because the Hellenistic Jews opened him the gates of the city. He plunders the temple and causes a horrible bloodbath. He exploited Israel more than his ancestors had done. |

THE SIXTH KING OF THE SOUTH Ptolemy VI Philometor 182 – 145 so the KOS will mobilize an extremely large and mighty army for war; but he will not stand, for schemes will be devised against him. Those who eat his choice food will destroy him, and his army will, overflow but many will fall down slain. Ptolemy VI Philometor is defeated by his uncle Antiochus Epiphanes in the battle near Pelusium. 170 He tries to flee, but he does not succeed in it. |
He will stir up his strength courage against the KOS with a large army; Around 170, Antiochus Epiphanes starts the so- called ’Sixth Syrian War’ against Egypt with a mighty army, where his nephew, who ist still under age, Ptolemy VI Philometor, is sitting on the throne. |

it will not turn out the way it did before. For ships of Kittim will come against him; Antiochus starts a new offensive against Egypt. When he advanced with his army toward Alexandria, he was ordered by the Romans to vacate Egypt. |

and become enraged at the holy covenant and regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. He returned home humiliated and vented his anger on the Jews, having the Hellenistic party as supporters. ANTIOCHUS / ANTICHRIST Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation His army raided upon Jerusalem, murdered many Jews, tore down the city walls, and established a reign of terror over Jerusalem. In December 168, divine service was abolished. A statue of Zeus was put up in the temple. By smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will display strength and take action. The priest Mattathias Maqqabi with his five sons opened the Maccabean resistance to the apostasy. This revolt met with a phenomenal success. The Jews beat off the Syrian armies and got Jerusalem back under control. Also the temple was consecrated anew again. 164 Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many; yet they will fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder for many days. |

Now when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will join with them in hypocrisy. Some of those who have insight will fall, in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time because it is still to come at the appointed time. Then the king will do as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will speak monstrous things against the God of gods; and he will prosper until the indignation is finished, for that which is decreed will be done. The edict concerning religion issued by Antiochus IV, with which he had forbidden sabbath, circumcision, feasts, the possession of the codes and the daily sacrifice on penalty of death was an atrocity which was directed not only against the Jews, but also against the ’Commander of the host’ (Dan 8,11), that is to say against the God of the gods. He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will magnify himself above them all. The god of the Seleucides was Apollo. But Antiochus had chosen Zeus for his god. He not only put up a Zeus altar in the temple in Jerusalem, but he also replaced the picture of Apollo on his coins by a picture of Zeus. With that he probably also checked the Tammuz- (Adonis-, Osiris-) cult of the women. |

But rumors from the East and from the North will disturb him, and he will go forth with great wrath to destroy and annihilate many. |
But instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones and treasures He will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to those who ack- nowledge him and will cause them to rule over the many, and will parcel out land for a price This seems to describe the introduction of the Zeus cult in Jerusalem by Antiochus and the preference of the Greek-friendly party among the Jews. He will also enter the Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall He will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him. |

Dan chap. 12 |
THE GREAT TRIBULATION AND THE RESCUE OF ISRAEL Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt. Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven, and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever. But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase. Then I, Daniel, looked and behold, two others were standing, one on this bank of the river and the other on that bank of the river. IT TAKES THREE AND A HALF TIMES WHEN THE DISPERSION OF ISRAEL ENDS And one said to the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river: How long will it be until the end of these wonders? I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, as he raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time; and as soon as they finish shattering the power of the holy people, all these events will be completed. As for me, I heard but could not understand; so I said: My lord, what will be the outcome of these events? He said: Go your way, Daniel, for these words are concealed and sealed up until the end time. Many will be purged, purified and refined, but the wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, 1,290 DAYS, BEGINNING AT THE TIME WHEN THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION HAD BEEN SET UP From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. How blessed is he who keeps waiting and attains to the 1,335 days! But as for you, go your way to the end; then you will enter into rest and rise again for your allotted portion at the end of the age. |
